The increasingly onerous requirements imposed by the law and regulatory bodies are making the practice of dentistry even more challenging and stressful. It is virtually impossible in today’s climate for the prudent practitioner to stay abreast and knowledgeable about every such requirement. The scope of this lecture is to provide a principled and practical approach to deal with the every day legal expectations that may come before the dentist. Topics such as how to deal with patient complaints, employee complaints, treatment misadventures, fraud, billing and insurance profiling practices, certain RCDSO requirements and cases will be discussed. In addition, useful tips on the various business and tax issues currently faced by dentists will be discussed.

Dr. Rajiv Arya BSc, LLB, DDS RCDSO and ODA Presidents Dr. R.K. Arya is a lawyer whose practice is focused on business law and the defence of health care professionals before their regulatory bodies and appeal boards. Dr. Arya also advises clients and lawyers on related matters. Dr. Arya received his law degree from the Osgoode Hall Law School. He received an award for the highest mark in civil litigation and the highest mark in the law of evidence. Apart from being an Ontario licensed lawyer, he is also a licensed and practicing dental surgeon. Dr. Arya was previously of Counsel and a former Prosecutor for the Royal College of Dental Surgeons of Ontario. Dr. Arya also holds a Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Arya has spoken nationwide to various organizations on a wide variety of legal matters concerning health care regulatory issues, informed consent law, professional corporations, employment law, leasing, professional risk management concerns, corporate, commercial and business transactions. Similarly, Dr. Arya’s works have been published in various esteemed journals on these topics.
