Presenter: Dr. Barry Schwartz

Barry Schwartz recently retired after 16 years, as Assistant Professor at  Schulich Medicine & Dentistry, Western University, London Ontario and Course Director for Practice Administration where the focus was on critical thinking, interpersonal-communications and applied ethics. He received his DDS and MHSc in Bioethics from the University of Toronto and his certificate in Alternate Dispute Resolution from York University. Dr. Schwartz was in clinical practice for 25 years. He conducted research projects at Western and has published many articles both nationally and internationally on the subject of dental ethics. He was awarded the Fellowship in Teaching Innovation Research Award at the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Schwartz has been recognized as a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy and a Fellow of the American College of Dentists for his contributions in dental ethics.

Course Description:

Disputes are inevitable in any business relationship, and dentistry is no exception. When disappointments or disagreements occur and effective communication channels remain open, matters are often rectified in a timely fashion. This can result in a greater sense of mutual respect amongst the parties and prevent similar problems from occurring down the road. It may also transform of the relationship, allowing for greater understanding of the needs and sensitivities of both parties. The net result is a closer, more professional and appreciative relationship with business associates patients and employees. This course will highlight conflict management approaches that do and do not work and will stress the importance of interpersonal communications.

Learning objectives:

  • explore the causes of common disputes
  • present various strategies of conflict resolution
  • understand the importance of good communication
  • develop office policies that include strategies to effectively defuse conflicts early

8:45 - 9:00 pm Q&A and Test

Please note the lecture starts at 6:15 pm sharp. Attendees who log in 15 minutes late or more will not be eligible for Category 1 credits, but will instead receive Category 2 credits. Our webinar platform will automatically report the time that attendees log in/out of the webinar.

You are required to complete a mandatory exam - You will receive a link following the lecture with instructions on how to complete and submit your exam upon completion (due by 9:30 PM on January 21, 2021).

RCDSO requires that attendance polling questions be asked at random points throughout the session. Attendees will be provided with links to submit their answers online.

Due to the numerous steps involved with Category 1 webinars, please register by the January 21 registration deadline. We cannot accept late registrations.
