Course Description:
This workshop will engage dentists in discussion of common clinical scenarios and their ethical considerations. It will combine an application of normative ethical principles and theories with actual risk management guidance to help dentists understand best practices in dental care.
Learning objectives:
1. To consider the ethical content of common clinical scenarios.
2. To appreciate different ways of reasoning ethically about common clinical scenarios.
3. To understand how ethics and risk management combine to achieve best practices in dental care.
Speakers Biography:
Carlos Quiñonez is a dental public health specialist, professor and Vice Dean and Director of Dentistry at the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, Western University. He graduated with a DMD from the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Manitoba (U of M) in 1998, and completed an MSc at the U of M’s Faculty of Medicine in 2004. He then completed a PhD and dental public health specialty at the University of Toronto in 2009, followed by a postdoctoral fellowship at St. Michael’s Hospital in Toronto. Carlos’ research centres on the politics and economics of dentistry, with a special focus on health and social equity. He is the author of The Politics of Dental Care in Canada, published by Canadian Scholars Press, and is regularly called upon by government and non-governmental agencies to provide advice on issues of dental care policy.
Dr. Lionel Lenkinski is a practicing endodontist, who is also the CEO of the Canadian Dental Protective Association, which is a mutual benefit association that provides risk management advice and legal assistance to dentists across Canada. He has been awarded numerous fellowships honours and awards for his contribution to the profession. He is a columnist and member of the editorial board of Ontario Dentist He has served on numerous Boards where he was instrumental in implementing responsible governance processes. He is considered a subject matter expert on professional ethics, risk management, and regulatory compliance for health care professionals. He is a regular speaker at National, Provincial conferences and Dental Faculties.
