Course Description:

Peri-implant disease diagnosis relies upon a clinician’s ability to synthesize information from clinical and radiographic sources. Correct diagnosis is key for early detection of peri-implant disease. We will discuss case definitions for peri-implant disease and how to correctly interpret diagnostic variables (including bleeding on probing, probing depth, and radiographic assessment). Throughout this discussion we will compare and contrast how to interpret these variables at teeth vs. implants, as there are important differences. Finally we will different therapeutic strategies for treating peri-implant disease including surgical management.

Learning objectives:

  • To understand case definitions for peri-implant health, peri-implant mucositis, and peri-implantitis
  • To understand differences in bleeding on probing at teeth vs implants
  • To understand differences in probing depth measurements at teeth vs implants
  • To learn key factors regarding radiographic assessment to differentiate peri-implant health vs disease
  • To learn key prosthetic variables influencing susceptibility to peri-implant disease
  • To learn about peri-implant disease treatment, including surgical management
